Scratch that Itch: Everything You Need to Know About Scratching the Surface of Itching!

Mar 1, 2024

Itching is a common problem that can cause discomfort and distraction. It can occur anywhere on the body and ranges from mild to severe. While it may not always be serious, it can be a symptom of a more significant health issue.

It is essential to see a board-certified dermatologist for itching, as itching has many causes, including skin conditions, allergies, and infections. Medications and medical conditions can also be underlying factors.

The most common causes of itching include:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Bug bites
  • Allergic reactions
  • Hives
  • Medication-induced itching

Itch can be treated with multiple modalities:

  • Topical steroids
  • Oral steroids
  • Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-histamines
  • Naltrexone
  • Biologic medications

It is essential to know the cause of itching because the treatments vary based on the cause. Not all treatments work for every type of itch. The best way to determine the cause of the itch is to see a dermatologist. During the visit, you should expect to bring the following:

  • Up-to-date medical problem list
  • Medication history (old and new medication)
    • Your dermatologist needs to know when you started medication.
  • List of new skin care products, fragrances/perfumes, laundry detergents, and soaps
  • Your current skincare routine
  • Medications, including over-the-counter medications, were tried for itch.

The above information can be beneficial in identifying the cause and starting appropriate treatment!
